Nissetog

Ok, first, a little background lesson.

A nisse is basically an elf.

So, a julenisse is a Christmas elf (jul = Christmas).

Santa Claus is a julenisse, however julenisse are not Santa Claus.

Got it?

Saturday was the Nissetog (tog = parade, so it was the elf parade) when all the children wear either a whole nisse outfit or just a nisselue (hat) and walk in a parade together along the wharf and up the main street where they get hot rice porridge. Marching band, but no floats or anything like that.

The Princess was well dressed for the occasion. Her grandmother is superknitter (wait until you see what she has done for the baby!) so knitted this for her, but it was super cold so she had another coat over the top and we just took it off for a quick photo session.

Mrs T was wrapped up warm too.

And then, the julenisse arrives on the boat - the big moment, so exciting!

He comes off the boat and walks through the parade giving out oranges to all the little nisse. Last year The Princess freaked out and was absolutely terrified when he stuck his head into the barnevogn to say hello and give her an orange - she wouldn't even take it.

So we were interested to see how it would go this year (though her mask of terror was admittedly a little amusing). She took one look at him and said "It is Uncle Arve, he has just dressed himself up!" Yes, julenisse is my father-in-law.

Somewhat of an anticlimax really.
